Portsmouth set to land George Edmundson with Tom Lockyer opting for Championship move

Tom Lockyer will not play against Bristol Rovers next season according to the latest reports.

The former Gas centre-back had been strongly linked with a move to League One rivals Portsmouth who are looking to put a side together to compete for promotion next season.

However BBC South TV and Radio Sports Reporter Andrew Moon, who commentates on Portsmouth, reports Wales international Lockyer will not be moving to Fratton Park this summer.

Pompey have reportedly had an offer of between £500K and £750K accepted for Oldham centre-back George Edmundson and sources at both clubs are said to be optimistic the deal will go through however personal terms are still being agreed.

Scottish giants Rangers and League One side Peterborough United were also chasing Edmundson's signature this summer according to reports.

Moon reports that Lockyer is set to sign for a Championship club which was always his aim with four clubs in the second tier of English football reportedly interested in his services at the start of the summer.

The former Rovers captain, who is still just 24, made his 238th appearance for the club in the Pirates' 2-1 victory over Barnsley on the final day of the 2018/19 season.

He left Rovers as a free agent after letting his contract run down.

Bristol Rovers have made four new signings already this summer, bringing in Tom Davies from Coventry City to replace Lockyer while Mark Little and Josh Hare, who were both free agents having left Bolton Wanderers and Eastleigh respectively, have come in to provide cover at right back following the departure of Daniel Leadbitter, James Clarke and Joe Partington.

The Pirates have also signed Dutch goalkeeper Jordi van Stappershoef from FC Volendam.
