Portsmouth's Stadium of Light smoke bomb fan banned from football for three years

The Portsmouth fan who threw a smoke bomb at Sunderland supporters last month has been banned from attending games for three years.

After Pompey’s goal in April’s 1-1 draw between the sides, a cannister was thrown from the away section in the north stand into the home supporters below.

The game was held up for four minutes while the matter was dealt with and one supporter needed treatment for smoke inhalation. Samuel Parrot, who threw the smoke bomb, was arrested immediatley.

Portsmouth fans were quick to condemn Parrot on the day.

The 18-year-old from Fareham was identified on closed circuit television. A black canister with “smoke” written on it was later found behind a seat.

Parrott admitted the offence, but Emma Hughes, defending, said in mitigation: “This was a stupid act rather than one designed to cause alarm.

“It was a smoke canister, not a flare or firework.

“Mr Parrott is not a hooligan in the accepted sense of the word. He doesn’t drink on matchdays or go about in a gang, he goes to matches on his own purely for the love of the game.

“He has written to both clubs to apologise, and to offered to make reparation by volunteering in some capacity. Sunderland has not replied, but he does have a meeting at Portsmouth.”

He was fined £253, including costs, and banned from designated football fixtures for three years.
