Portsmouth promoted, Sunderland's hopes dented and Bristol Rovers safe in mid-table - how League One is predicted to finish

There were several huge results in the League One promotion race on Saturday, with Rotherham United and Portsmouth enhancing their chances of going up.

The Millers extended their lead at the top with a 3-2 win over mid-table Burton Albion, while Portsmouth put down a huge marker with a 2-0 win over Sunderland.

There were also big wins for Oxford United and Peterborough United over Blackpool and Ipswich Town respectively, denting their hopes of a top-six place.

And while Bristol Rovers are enduring a miserable 12-game winless run in all competitions, suffering another defeat against on Saturday, they appear in little danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.

Because despite two of the bottom three winning yesterday – Southend United and Bolton Wanderers – they remain so far off the pace, with the occupants of the final relegation spot Tranmere Rovers rated a 71 per cent chance of relegation.

Predicting exactly how this often inconsistent league will finish by early May isn't exactly an exact science, and that is part of the fun.

However, renowned American statistican Nate Silver, via his FiveThirtyEight website, believes he has the most accurate model for forecasting the standings and the probability of where each team will finish.

Based on FiveThirtyEight's simulation, here is how League One is set to finish taking into consideration results so far and the games ahead.
