Portsmouth midfielder confident on top two after watching Coventry vs Sunderland

Portsmouth midfielder Gareth Evans believes they have every chance of making the top two in League One and going up automatically after watching Coventry beat Sunderland last Sunday.

Coventry moved to top spot thanks to their 1-0 win over the Black Cats at St Andrew's, with Portsmouth leaping above Sunderland 24 hours earlier thanks to a 3-0 win over Rochdale.

They now face what could be a season-defining week though as they travel to Peterborough on Saturday, before entertaining Fleetwood Town on Tuesday.

But Evans feels a fresh sense of confidence having watched two of the promotion favourites go head to head last weekend.

Evans told Portsmouth News: "The autos are there to be taken.

"I watched the Coventry vs Sunderland game on Sunday and I wasn’t blown away by either of those sides.

"We feel we’re as good as anyone in this league and the automatic promotion places are there for us.

"It may well be it’s the play-offs, but I really don’t see why we can’t get into the automatic places."

While Evans is confident, Portsmouth have one of the toughest run-ins of the promotion contenders. As well as the upcoming games with Peterborough and Fleetwood, Kenny Jacket's side also have games to play against Doncaster, Ipswich, Oxford, Blackpool and Burton - on top of the Checkatrade Trophy final.
