Portsmouth given a boost in pursuit of departing Bristol Rovers skipper Tom Lockyer following latest reports from Nottingham Forest

Bristol Rovers' outgoing skipper Tom Lockyer is not considered a major target by Nottingham Forest this summer, according to contrasting reports coming out of the Championship club.

Centre-back Lockyer is a free agent this summer after leaving the Gas and is understood to be in discussions with at least four different clubs over his future.

The Portsmouth News are reporting that League One Pompey are keen on the 24-year-old defender who has made 238 appearances for Rovers and is a full Welsh international.

Forest had monitoring his position this time last year, during Aitor Karanka’s tenure at the City Ground, while Bristol Live understands the club have made contact with the Wales international over his availability.

But according to Nottingham Live, Lockyer is not high on Forest manager Martin O’Neill’s list of targets.

O’Neill is looking to put his stand on the Forest squad during his first full transfer window at the club.

Last week Lockyer confirmed there are a group of four second tier clubs keen on signing him, as well as handful of League One sides who could be considered promotion challengers.

Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol he said: “It's about weighing things up at the minute, it's too easy to rush into things and get sucked in by certain aspects of different clubs.

"Realistically there are four Championship teams who are willing to put something on the table and there's a few other League One teams.

"I've got to go away with Wales this summer so it will be nice to have something done before that, whether we'll able to or not will be a different story."

According to Nottingham Live Forest want to sign a right back to provide competition for Tendayi Darikwa, but their preferred option is understood to be West Ham defender Sam Byram.
