Portsmouth fan arrested after flare thrown into Sunderland end during League One clash

A Portsmouth supporter has been arrested after throwing a flare at Sunderland supporters during a League One clash at the Stadium of Light.

Play in the match was halted for around four minutes after Portsmouth had equalised after 24 minutes of the match through Jamal Lowe after a flare was discharged and then thrown at Sunderland supporters in the north stand below the away end.

A large smoke cloud could be seen after in the North stand, which is where the Black Cats allocate tickets for families.

In a statement released via Twitter, Northumbria Police confirmed the offender had been identified and arrested.

They wrote: "SAFC vs Portsmouth FC - a flare has been discharged within the away section of the Stadium of Light.

"The offender has been identified, located and swiftly arrested by officers from Northumbria police.

"Behaviour like this will not be tolerated within stadiums."

It is the second incident at the Stadium of Light this month.

Earlier in April Sunderland fans were furious as many missiles were hurled by Coventry City supporters during the Sky Blues' 5-4 victory on Wearside.

Owner Stewart Donald described himself as mortified by the events and promised better protection in future for supporters. Coventry promised to ban any supporter identified as having thrown any missile.
