Portrush weather warning as Open Championship prepares for final round

Fans attending The Open on Sunday have been warned to expect some deteriorating weather conditions as the day unfolds.

We have had a mixed bag at Royal Portrush over the past three days, giving the golfers plenty to think about during their rounds.

Fans have also had to take note of conditions, from swirling winds to heavy rainfall, to sudden bursts of glorious sunshine.

Sunday started quite well with decent weather for the early morning starters.

But that is expected to all change throughout the afternoon.

Rain is expected to arrive late around lunchtime, with heavy bursts throughout the remainder of the day.

There could be a quarter of an inch of rain in the afternoon and another half inch between 6pm and midnight.

There will also be some wind, starting at approximately 15mph, then increasing to 20-25 mph with gusts up to 35 after 4pm.

Organisers R&A brought forward Sunday's tee-times by about an hour on Saturday night to try and avoid the worst of the heavy wind and rain expected at Royal Portrush.

They said in a statement: "Sunday tee times have been moved forward due to the adverse weather forecast.

"The first tee time will be at 7:32am with the leaders beginning their final round at 1.47pm."

Meanwhile, Open leader Shane Lowry said: "I know it's going to rain. I know it's going to be difficult at times and I have just have to try and shoot the best score I can."

As always, check the forecast before you head out.
