Portobello residents want portaloos removed to stop area from being 'party central' after plaza reopened

Portobello residents have called for recently installed portaloos to be removed removed to stop the area from being 'party central' after the plaza was reopened.

The outdoor seated square in the canalside district was closed off for a number of weeks after large crowds gathered there.

Reports of anti-social behaviour, urination against homes, and heavy littering emerged before Dublin City Council took the decision to fence off the square.

The square has since reopened, and the Council have installed portaloos in the area.

However, a local residents group has called for the portaloos to be removed "immediately", claiming it encourages people to turn the area into "party central".

According to RTE, the Portobello Residents Association say that while overall locals are divided, those who live closest to the portaloos want them gone.

Dublin City Council said that Portobello was one location where they were mandated to provide facilities for an outdoor summer.

They added: "We have great sympathy for residents and continue to implement measures to try to mitigate the effects of such behaviours, in conjunction with residents and An Garda Síochána.

"However, with the reopening of the plaza it was deemed appropriate to provide toilet facilities."

The toilets, like the others in the city, are open until 11pm and are cleaned regularly.
