Portobello local slams irresponsible beach parking: 'I don't want to be killed by people like this'

Local residents have slammed visitors parking in Portobello, after images were posted showing vehicles blocking vital access-ways such as emergency service routes.

Sites such as Portobello have become increasingly popular with visitors in recent weeks as warmer weather and an easing of lockdown saw many people flock to the beach.

During lockdown, there has also been a suspension on parking tickets and metres which has also meant a lack of parking wardens on patrol to enforce the rules.

This morning, one local resident took to social media to share his disgust over three different parked cars in the area which had blatantly ignored parking rules.

Pictures show an Audi parked on a double yellow line, with a large keep clear notice painted on the road just in front of it.

Local man Andy Mackie shared the photos accompanied by a long and passionate statement about the dangers of this kind of behaviour, saying:

"One is blocking access for ambulances and fire engines to Portobello beach. Apparently missing the four foot high words KEEP CLEAR painted on the road.

"Another is blocking the end of a disabled space so only one legitimate badge holder can use the space reserved, by law, for blue badge holders. The third then decided to park on double yellow lines beside the grey/silver offender blocking further emergency vehicle access.

"Someone's granny having a heart attack on the beach. Someone's child with an asthma attack. Someone drowning.

"These spaces are for emergency access to the beach.

"I don't want to be killed by people like this. (though I am sure they love their kids)."

Another vehicle has been caught blocking the end of a disabled only parking space, and a third vehicle can be seen to be parked right on the keep clear access-way for emergency services to Portobello beach.

However, drivers who have flouted parking rules in recent weeks may quickly be caught out, as parking regulations are set to come back into force on June 22.

Parking tickets were suspended in the capital during lockdown as a way to help key workers in the city, but from Monday June 22 any vehicle parked incorrectly risks getting a ticket.

NHS staff and care workers can find free parking spaces to use whilst carrying out their roles.
