Porto president "thanks God" for Mohamed Salah not breaking Danilo's leg

Porto president Pinto da Costa hit out at Mohamed Salah for his challenge on Danilo during Tuesday's night's Champions League clash at Anfield.

The Egyptian caught the Porto skipper with a raised boot, but despite VAR being available for the quarter-final clash he escaped without even being booked.

Visiting goalkeeper Iker Casillas criticised both that decision and the failure to give Porto a penalty for a handball by Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Da Costa went even further.

"Danilo has to give thanks to God because this is an entrance to break a leg," he said, via Portuguese outlet Record .

The 81-year-old also claimed that Casillas "had a day off" given Liverpool's failure to test him regularly.

The Reds went 2-0 up before the half hour mark thanks to goals from Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino, but didn't offer much threat in the second half.

Former referee Mark Clattenburg claimed that Salah should have been sent off for the challenge.

"Mo Salah was very fortunate not to be sent off for his challenge on Porto's Danilo Pereira," he told the Mail Online .

Jurgen Klopp apologises to Jordan Henderson over Liverpool role

"The Liverpool forward comes over the top of the ball and clearly plants his studs onto the shin of his opponent.

"UEFA guidelines on this type of challenge are clear - anything with studs above the ankle is a red card.

"The VAR should have sent the referee to the review area, where I am sure he would have decided that Salah should be sent off. Instead, he is free to play in the second leg."
