Portmarnock Golf Club votes to allow female members for first time in 127 year history

Portmarnock Golf Club have voted to allow female members to join the club for the first time in 127 years.

The club's members voted today to end their male-only membership policy, which has been in place since the founding of the club in 1894.

83.4% of members voted in favour of the rule change. 16.6% voted against.

The old rulebook in club read: "The club shall consist of members and associate members who shall be gentlemen properly elected and who shall conform with the rules of amateur status."

That rule, Rule 3, will now be amended to take out the wording "who shall be gentlemen".

Minster for Sport Catherine Martin reacted positively to the news on social media, saying: "I welcome this decision and hope women in the community now take up golf and perhaps in future we'll see even more women go pro."
