Portmarnock club 'shrouded in sadness' after death of two founding members

Tributes have flowed for two founding members of Portmarnock Sports & Leisure Club who were both laid to rest today.

Bernard McDonagh of Portmarnock and formerly of Nenagh, Co. Tipperary who died peacefully on August 16.

He also worked as a former Secretary General of Departments of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and Communications

The late Bernard is the father of local Labour councillor Brian McDonagh.

He was described as "an absolute gentleman" and "great craic" by his family and friends on social media.

"So much of all of us is from you. You'll live on in the phrases, the songs, the mischief and the craic," his son Niall McDonagh wrote on social media.

Shay Coyle of Portmarnock and formerly of Carlingford, Co. Louth passed away on August 21 after a short illness.

He was the cherished husband of Phyllis and is very sadly missed by his beloved wife, son James, daughters Ciara and Aoife, daughter-in-law Lisa, sons-in-law Paul and Darragh, and five grandchildren.

Portmarnock Sports & Leisure Club paid tribute to both men on social media today, saying: "Our club is shrouded in sadness today as our community lays to rest two of our founding members. Bernard and Shay have been hugely valued in our club since the very start."

One person wrote: "Two legends of the PSLC....will be sadly missed by all.....RIP."

Another wrote: "Bernard and Shay have made such a contribution to the PSLC and to Portmarnock. They'll be sadly missed."

"Our thoughts and wishes are with their friends and family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha."
