Portland shooting: Man killed as rival protesters clash on US city's 95th night of unrest

A man was shot and killed as protesters and pro-Trump supporters clashed on the streets of US city that has seen its 95th night of unrest.

US media has named the victim who died in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday as Aaron "Jay" Danielson, but he was also understood to have used the name Jay Bishop.

He was pictured lying on the ground wearing a Patriot Prayer cap and a Blue Lives Matter patch on his pants.

Patriot Prayer, founded in 2016, has links with the far right, while 'Blue Lives' is a campaign in response to Black Lives Matter that supports the police.

On Sunday President Donald Trump tweeted "Rest In Peace Jay!"

The tweet included several pictures of the victim. A GoFundMe page has been set up for him.

Speaking today US presidential candidate Joe Biden said: "Fires are burning, and we have a president who fans the flames."

"This president, long ago, forfeited any moral leadership in this country. He can't stop the violence, because for years he's fomented it."

Local news site The Oregonian report the suspect in the shooting is Michael Reinoehl, a 48-year-old father-of-two who describes himself as '100% ANTIFA'.

Reinoehl has not been charged nor have police commented on his connection to Saturday night's violence.

He is reported to have written on Facebook earlier this year: 'I am 100 % ANTIFA all the way! I am willing to fight for my brothers and sisters!'

He has also shared videos of people burning Trump 2020 flags.

Police have released little information and Chief Chuck Lovell said Sunday that investigators are still gathering evidence, including surveillance video from area businesses.

Saturday marked the 95th night of unrest in Portland since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, who died after a white officer knelt on his neck for around nine minutes.

In footage taken on the night of the killing in Portland, one woman can be heard telling a cheering crowd: "I am not sad that a f***ing fascist died tonight."

The person who appeared to fire the shots and a handful of other people nearby then flee out of view as the victim staggers for a few feet and collapses on the ground.

Several people are seen rushing over when a car turns a corner and skids to a stop in front of the victim.

Mr Danielson was shot in the chest and died at the scene.

The rising levels of violence in Portland have become the source of a political row between Trump and Democratic presidential rival Joe Biden, with the two parties blaming each other for the disorder ahead of November's election.
