Portishead's Christmas lights have been switched back on as thank you to NHS and frontline workers

Christmas lights in Portishead have been switched back on – to say thanks to NHS and frontline staff working around the clock during the coronavirus outbreak.

The lights in the trees at West Hill Triangle and Wyndham Way, which feature as part of the town’s annual festive display, have been switched on in tribute to those helping the country during the pandemic.

The illuminations will be on from 8pm-11pm each day.

Portishead Lights Committee chairman Stu Hamer said: “This is only a small gesture but we feel it will once again show the great Portishead spirit and let those working on the frontline know how much people appreciate what they are doing.

“Meanwhile, remember stay at home and help the NHS save lives.”

The lights display is often described as the ‘best in the west’ and run from the High Street, up to West Hill and the Waitrose Piazza.

Each year more than 100 volunteers come out in all kinds of weather to put up and take down the lights.

It costs around £20,000 a year to put on the display, the majority of which is met by local fundraising.

People across the UK have been lighting up their homes blue and digging out their Christmas lights to pay tribute to the NHS and frontline workers.

The costs of the special switch on has been funded by Future Bathrooms.
