Portion of road caves in near Delhi's Hauz Khas, no injuries

NEW DELHI: A massive sinkhole was spotted under IIT flyover near Hauz Khas, Delhi on Saturday.

According to UB Singh, assistant engineer, the incident was brought to notice between 9.30am-10am.

"We have barricaded the area and informed the traffic department," said Singh.

He added that cracked sewer line connected to Delhi Jal Board might have caused the sinkhole. Exact cause is yet to be ascertained.

Following the incident, Delhi Traffic Police asked the commuters to take an alternate route.

"Traffic going from Adhchini to IIT has been diverted from Adhchini to Katwaria Sarai after a portion of a road near IIT red light (traffic signal) caved in," tweeted Delhi Traffic Police at 1.35pm on Saturday.

No injuries have been reported in the incident.

The IMD on Friday had issued an orange alert, predicting moderate rain on Saturday and warning of possible waterlogging in low-lying areas of the national capital and major traffic disruptions.

The department has issued a yellow alert for Sunday, and orange alert also for Monday.
