Porthcawl nightclub crash: 'Drunk' man injures 13 after car ploughs into smoking shelter

Thirteen people are in hospital after a car collided with a smoking shelter outside a nightclub in Wales.

A suspected drink-driver is thought to have crashed into the smoking shelter in Porthcawl at 1am on Sunday, WalesOnline reported.

Thirteen ambulances arrived to take 10 people - at least one as young as 17 - to hospital for non-life threatening injuries, while three more were taken to the emergency department.

One man, a 24-year-old believed to have been under the influence of alcohol whilst driving an Audi A4, has been arrested and taken to Bridgend police station.

Another 18-year-old woman believed to have been in the same car is understood to be assisting with inquiries.

The event was declared a major incident and off-duty clinical, senior management and support staff called in.

A spokeswoman for Princess of Wales Hospital and Morriston Hospital praised the efforts of the teams, according to WalesOnline. "Staff have been excellent, and didn't hesitate to come in. They worked efficiently and in an organised way, and they helped considerably during a difficult situation," she said.

No one is thought to be in a life-threatening condition.
