Porter found dead in hospital car park after taking lethal levels of morphine

A hospital porter struggling depression left emotion-wracked letters to his family before ending his life in his car.

Stephen Begley drove to an overflow car park used by staff at Morriston Hospital in Swansea before he was discovered dead by police.

A toxicology report carried out after the postmortem found the 31-year-old had very high levels of morphine in his system.

The hearing in Swansea was told that Mr Begley had split up with the mother of his child and had been exasperated by attempts to see his son.

He also had money issues, but his problems came to a head when he was not allowed to attend an appointment for his son.

The hearing was told he had tried to end his life on at least one previous occasion and had seen various specialists for counselling and treatment regarding his mental health.

But it was on Friday November 16 last year that, after being reported missing by his anxious family, that he was found dead in his Peugeot car.

Surrounding him were letters to his family.

Assistant coroner Aled Gruffydd refused to rule on the fact that Mr Begley might have taken the lethal morphine from the hospital.

As porter, he would not have access to the drugs, and there were stringent measures in place at the hospital to ensure they didn't fall into the wrong hands.

Mr Gruffydd recorded a conclusion of suicide.
