Porte primed for Tour de France after claiming victory in Tour de Suisse

Australian cyclist Richie Porte has geared up for next month's Tour de France by claiming overall victory on the Tour of Switzerland.

Porte finished more than a minute clear of his nearest rival on the overall standings after his BMC teammate Stefan Kung won the final stage time trial.

The 33-year-old Tasmanian said it was his biggest win to date.

"Biggest victory of my career!" he tweeted.

He said his win came off the back of the hard work of his teammates.

"It's absolutely incredible. Winning the team time trial and then the guys did such a fantastic job all week and to win this race, it means a lot to me," he said.

Porte said he could put in an even better performance at next month's Tour de France.

"It's good signs. I mean, I haven't raced since Tour of Romandie," he said.

"I was at home for the birth of my son two weeks ago and I've only had one night at home with him so I think it's great for me to get to go home for a bit of time, a bit of a training camp, and I think I can be better at the Tour de France."
