Portal Leisure Centre lights turned on five days early in bid to avoid another charity cock-up

Leisure bosses are praying it's third time lucky for Irvine's Portal Leisure Centre ahead of a charity lights switch-on this weekend.

The building is among 16 Scottish ‘landmarks’- prepped to turn purple on Sunday to raise awareness of Fibromyalgia.

Two previous attempts to light up the building for Remembrance Day and Parkinson's awareness week failed.

Portal chiefs set the building's lights to purple on Wednesday - five days early - in a bid to avoid another embarrassing episode.

But they admit to still having ongoing problems with the Portal's lighting system.

A spokesperson for KA Leisure said: “We continue to experience intermittent issues. However the lighting has been set to purple in preparation for Sunday.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson added: “We are happy to support FFU Scotland and light up purple at The Portal on Sunday to raise awareness of fibromyalgia.

The event is being run in conjunction with  FFU Scotland CIC, a non-profit social enterprise based in North Ayrshire.

Fibromyalgia is a highly debilitating central nervous system syndrome that affects both men and women across the globe and although the indicators now suggest suppressed trauma as the potential triggers there are no definite tests to diagnose nor current cure .

The charity are asking those going to the event to share their pictures to Facebook, Instagram and twitter using #ffuscotlandletsdoitpurple.
