Portadown boss Matthew Tipton praises 'courage' of players following Jerry Thompson death

Portadown boss Matthew Tipton has praised the "courage" shown by his players following the death of Jerry Thompson.

Players and officials from the Championship club attended the funeral of their former player on Saturday.

Thompson (24) passed away suddenly on Tuesday, sending shockwaves throughout the Northern Ireland football community.

The Ports held a team meeting on Thursday night to offer support to the club's players, and they travel to Ballinamallard United today in a rescheduled 5pm kick-off.

The club posted a short statement from manager Tipton on Saturday afternoon.

In it, he said it had been a "difficult week" for his side, and urged fans to be "as positive as possible" ahead of this evening's league game.

"After a difficult week, this morning our young team attended the funeral of one of our former players Jerry Thompson," Tipton said.

"The strength and courage shown so far this week by them has been commendable and is going to be tested during the game this evening when emotions run highest.

"I ask every fan going to the game or supporting from afar be as positive as possible  these young men today.

"We have just laid to rest a young man in the prime of his life and I would like everyone to remember Jerry today in a positive manner."
