Portadown bonfire collapse: Miracle no one was killed, says councillor

A councillor has said it is "a miracle that no one was killed" after video footage emerged of people running away as a bonfire collapsed.

The footage from the Edgarstown bonfire in Portadown has been shared online after the pyre was lit on Friday, two days earlier than usual.

Sinn Féin councillor Paul Duffy said it is a miracle no one was killed or seriously injured after the bonfire collapsed onto a road on Friday night.

Fire crews were pictured at the scene of the bonfire in Portadown.

Speaking after the Edgarstown bonfire collapsed Coun Duffy said: "Imagery of a bonfire collapsing in Portadown last night is deeply concerning.

"Nearby residents, drivers and homes were placed in serious danger as this bonfire came crashing down on to a main road. It’s a miracle that no one was killed.

"It’s long past time the PSNI, Housing Executive and other agencies took their responsibilities seriously and act to remove these dangerous bonfires before someone is killed."

It comes after a controversial bonfire in Limavady was lit early.

The pyre on the Greystone Road in Limavady, which had been painted green, white and orange, was set alight in the early hours of Saturday morning, ahead of this weekend's planned events.

It had been criticised by local Sinn Fein MLA Caoimhe Archibald as being "an expression of hate".

Tweeting a picture of the bonfire, she said: "This is the bonfire in Limavady. This isn’t an expression of culture, it’s an expression of hate."

On Friday, SDLP East Derry MLA Cara Hunter also tweeted a picture of the bonfire and said: "This sectarian bonfire does not reflect the warm and welcoming people of Limavady. This expression of hate is not welcome in our communities.

"In 2021, do people really think this is an legitimate expression of culture? We’re fed up."
