Port Vale vs Nottingham Forest player ratings: Mighten and Fernandes impress, Carvalho shows quality

Nottingham Forest secured a comfortable 2-0 win over Port Vale as they continued their build-up to the new season.

Goals from Alex Mighten and Jack Colback in the first half secured victory at Vale Park.

Here’s how Reds reporter Sarah Clapson rated the Forest players at Vale Park.

Jordan Smith (came off at half-time): Pulled off a couple of really smart reaction saves, from Devante Rodney and James Wilson, to ensure he kept a clean-sheet. Not quite so confident with crosses, but still made a good impression - timely, too, given the arrival of Ethan Horvath.

Jordan Gabriel (came off after 75 minutes): Made some lung-busting runs down the right and was a useful attacking outlet. Perhaps still needs some work defensively but overall did well.

Baba Fernandes (came off after 75 minutes): A really strong performance in the heart of the defence. Composed on the ball and was keen to take it forward, making a real rampaging run in the first half.

Loic Mbe Soh: Partnership with Fernandes showed plenty of promise for the future; two young players with bags of potential. Both comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Jayden Richardson (came off after 75 minutes): Back from his loan spell and settled in well at left-back - an area where the Reds are light on options. Didn’t look out of place at all and pushed forward when he could.

Ryan Yates (came off after 61 minutes): Back to the kind of form he showed in the first half of last season. Wore the captain’s armband and led by example, constantly in communication with his teammates. Used the ball really well, too.

b: Will be hoping to seize his opportunity and catch the manager’s eye during pre-season. A steady game in the holding role and worked pretty well alongside Yates. In the right place to score his team’s second.

Cafu (came off after 61 minutes): Keen to get involved, particularly in the first half and was involved in some good build-up play, including the shot which led to Colback’s goal.

Joao Carvalho (came off after 61 minutes): Will no doubt continue to divide opinion now he is back wearing the Garibaldi. Showed some real moments of quality, including in the first half when he twisted and turned his way into the penalty area.

Alex Mighten: Hit the back of the net with a fabulous strike to set the Reds on their way to victory. Caused the home side plenty of problems with a very lively display.

Nuno da Costa: Offered something a bit different up front. Showed some neat touches and worked hard. Suited him better than playing out wide, as he has done previously for Forest.

Brice Samba (came on for the second half): A vocal presence when he came on the pitch. Commanded his area well, helping out a young back line.

Joe Lolley (came on after 61 minutes): Good to see him back on the pitch. Will benefit from getting minutes under his belt and had some decent touches.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Jack Colback looks to win the ball back against Port Vale (Stoke Sentinel)

Tyrese Fornah (came on after 61 minutes): Really caught the eye with an accomplished display. Looks to have made great progress from his loan spell.

Oliver Hammond (came on after 61 minutes): Good experience to get on the pitch. Looked to get involved.

Ateef Konate (came on after 61 minutes): Showed his potential in the final half hour of a game which became a bit disjointed.

Josh Barnes (came on after 61 minutes): Helped his team secure a comfortable 2-0 win.

Aaron Donnelly, Sam Sanders, Fin Back (came on after 75 minutes): Good experience for the trio as they got some minutes on the pitch.

Subs not used: Wright.
