Port Tennant Canal has been turned into a massive fly tip with all of this rubbish dumped there

This is the latest example of fly tipping, which had left a heap of rubble in a Swansea canal.

Planks of wood, carpet and black bags have been dumped in Port Tennant canal from the bridge on Wern Fawr Road leading to Ashlands Playing fields

It is just the latest in a series of fly tipping incidents across the region, including on the mountainside in the Swansea Valley , and in woodland in Pontarddulais .

One resident said: “I just moved out of Port Tennant and I know that it used to be bad but to see people still doing this sort of thing is just sad.”

Port Tennant canal is popular with walkers and runs approximately eight miles from Port Tennant to its junction with Neath canal at Aberdulais .

Despite boats not having navigated it since 1934 it has survived more or less intanct due to the fact it is used as a water source for local industries.

Boats have not navigated the Tennant Canal since 1934 and yet it has survived more-or-less intact. This is largely down to the fact that the Tennant canal, along with the Neath canal, is used as a water source for local industries.

The site is known to be used by otter, as well as birds such as kingfisher, sedge warbler, peregrine and kestrel.

The canal is owned and managed by the Port Tennant Navigation Company.

A spokesman for the company said: “Fly tipping in the canal is a constant issue for the Canal Company along the length of the canal.

“However, most of the time it is below the water level and unseen until the weed is cut or dredging takes place.

“We have instructed the Canal foreman to inspect and remove this rubbish as soon as possible.”
