Port Stephens restaurant worker charged with almost $40,000 in fraud

A WOMAN accused of defrauding a Port Stephens business of almost $40,000 over two years will face court next month.

The charges stem from an investigation that began in October after a restaurant owner flagged discrepancies in their takings with Port Stephens-Hunter police.

Officers began an investigation into the Soldiers Point Road business's bookings. On Tuesday, inquiries led them to to arrest a 42-year-old woman at a Nelson Bay home.

"Police will allege the woman, an employee at the restaurant, stole in excess of $37,149.40," NSW Police said in a statement.

She was charged with 16 counts of steal property as a clerk or servant and granted conditional bail.

The 42-year-old will face court again in Raymond Terrace on December 9.
