Port slump to fourth place after surprise Chainat draw

Bangkok Glass players celebrate a goal against Ratchaburi. PR

A late goal by Arthit Bootjinda gave Port a 1-1 home draw with lowly Chainat but it wasn't enough to help them avoid a drop to fourth place in Thai League 1 last night.

SCG Muang Thong United, who rallied to beat Police Tero 4-2 on Saturday night, took over sole possession of third place with Buriram United and Bangkok United clinging to the top two spots respectively.

Port were staring at an upset loss after Bernard Henri gave Chainat the upper hand in the 30th minute. Arthit netted the equaliser in the 84th as Port's winless run extended to three games.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Glass' late resurgence continued last night with a 2-1 victory over Ratchaburi as they improved their chances of surviving in Thai League 1.

The Glass Rabbits' win came a day after Air Force Central became the first team to be relegated to Thai League 2 next year as they went down 2-1 at Chonburi late Saturday night.

Bangkok Glass were left in a precarious situation after struggling through the first half of the league.

A second-half brace by Chatree Chimtalay at home last night not only helped Bangkok Glass cancel out a goal by Ratchaburi's Soo Il-Kang but also lifted them to 10th place in the table.

At Singha Stadium, Chiang Rai United picked up three important points by edging PT Prachuap 3-2 in an entertaining tussle.

Victor Cardozo put hosts Chiang Rai ahead in the sixth minute before Chaiyawat Buran made it 2-0 seven minutes later.

Prachuap recovered through a penalty converted by Lonsana Doumbouya in the 59th, but the home team grabbed their third goal in the 72nd minute when Akrawin Sawaddee headed home a Chaiyawat cross.

Doumbouya was on target again in the 74 minute to reduce the deficit but Prachuap's bid for a draw didn't carry the needed impetus.

Also last night, Nelson Bonilla struck in the last minute to give struggling Sukhothai a 1-0 victory away at Suphanburi.
