Port of Blyth completes its biggest offshore decommissioning project

Northumberland’s biggest ever oil and gas decommissioning project has been completed at the Port of Blyth.

The project has seen a number of wellheads and wellhead protection structures delivered to Blyth from Perenco’s Thames field in the North Sea.

The port has worked alongside Maersk Decom and Maersk Supply Service to remove and recycle the subsea equipment as well as manage the waste produced through the work.

Dismantling and downsizing the structures took place at Port of Blyth’s dedicated facility at its Battleship Wharf terminal.

Martin Lawlor, chief executive of Port of Blyth, said: “This project was successfully completed alongside major partners in Maersk Decom and Maersk Supply Service. It further proves the viability of our fully licenced decom facility and thanks to our enviable mid-North Sea location gives us an opportunity to position ourselves as a major player as decommissioning in the sector ramps up over the coming months and years.”

The work follows on from several smaller projects that have taken place in Blyth, including the removal and decommission of two 2MW turbines owned by EON. The turbines were the UK’s first offshore wind farm and needed to be dismantled having reached the end of their lifespan.

Port of Blyth is home to some of the world’s largest offshore and renewable energy firms. It also houses a dedicated decommissioning site that can handle up to 50,000 tonnes of offshore energy materials per year.
