A candlelight march has been held in Port Lincoln for the 13-year-old boy who was killed when a garbage truck picked up the industrial bin he was sleeping in on Tuesday morning.

More than 100 people, including the boy's family and friends, marched from the town jetty to where the accident occurred.

Many carried candles and laid flowers at the scene.

The boy has been described by his distraught friends as happy, joyful, very bright and as someone who always had a smile on his face.

On Wednesday, the principal of the school where the 13-year-old attended described him as a well-liked student who would be greatly missed.

"The student was a well-liked, caring, friendly student at our school," Lincoln Gardens Primary School principal Sandra Spencer said.

On Friday, SA Best MP Connie Bonaros called for an independent joint inquiry into the circumstances around the boy's death, to be undertaken by the Guardian for Children and Young People and the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People.

She also called for the coroner to urgently investigate the death.

"The child protection system, in this instance, has failed all three boys sleeping in that dumpster," Ms Bonaros said.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Child Protection said the boy who died was not in state care.

The boy's family has asked the ABC not to name him or share images of him.
