An earthquake has shaken Western Australia's Pilbara region overnight.

The 5.3 magnitude quake was felt just after 9:00pm in Port Hedland and Karratha, about 1,500 kilometres north of Perth.

The epicentre of the quake was near Marble Bar — about 125 kilometres south-east of Port Hedland — at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

GeoScience Australia seismologist Tanja Pejic said the quake was not particularly unique.

"Western Australia is actually one of the more seismically active areas in Australia so this is not unusual," Dr Pejic said.

"We've had 23 earthquakes since 2000 that were magnitude five and larger in Western Australia."

GeoScience Australia said it had received more than 1,000 reports from people who felt the quake.
