Port Fairy COVID-19 scare after family's holiday visit

Staff from South West Healthcare in nearby Warrnambool are conducting a "deep clean" of the accommodation where the family stayed.

Authorities are hopeful COVID-19 hasn't spread to the south-west of Victoria after a family of four that holidayed in the popular tourism town of Port Fairy tested positive for the virus.

The family returned to Melbourne, cutting their holiday short after learning a relative had contracted the coronavirus.

Moyne Shire Mayor Daniel Meade says the family members — two adults and two children — were asymptomatic while in Port Fairy and a deep clean of their accommodation is being done.

"Council is aware that a family of four who visited Port Fairy for three days last week, have returned home where they have tested positive for COVID-19," Cr Meade said.

"The family did the right thing, cutting their holiday short after being told a close family member in Melbourne had a confirmed case of the virus.

"They immediately returned to their home, which is not a hotspot suburb, and got tested."

Risk is low

South West Healthcare is "deep cleaning" the accommodation where the family stayed, and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is carrying out further investigations, including contact tracing.

"Further details of where the family visited while in Port Fairy are not yet known and will be part of the DHHS investigation and contact tracing," Cr Meade said.

"While the advice is that the risk of community transmission is low, this is a very real reminder that we are not immune to the virus in our region.

Moyne Shire recorded one case of COVID-19 in March, but it is the only case attributed to the shire since the pandemic began.
