Port, ex-champs Buriram claim important victories

Prolific striker: Port's Nelson Bonilla celebrates his goal.

Port won their first match under new coach Dusit Chalermsan on Saturday night, when former champions Buriram United joined early pacesetters Samut Prakan City at the top of Thai League 1 standings.

Port struck twice in the first 20 minutes to hand newcomers Khon Kaen United a 2-0 loss.

Buriram were put ahead after 11 minutes by Samuel Rosa, and Supchai Chaided, Chakkit Laptrakul and Peeradon Chamratsamee added goals after the break to hand promoted Chiangmai United a 4-0 defeat.

Hosts Port captured three important points that gave them a tie for third place on five points, two adrift of Samut Prakan and Buriram.

Port were given the start they needed as Pakorn Prempak planted a curling free-kick into the Khon Kaen net on 14 minutes.

Four minutes later, the hosts doubled their margin when a lightning Nelson Bonilla shot went past Khon Kaen goalkeeper Teerat Nakchumnarn like the wind.

Former champions Chiang Rai United were held to a 0-0 draw at home by 10-man Ratchaburi last night. The visitors were reduced to 10 men after Luke Woodland was sent off in the 21st minute.

Chonburi picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 home victory over Nongbua Pitchaya.

Worawi's comeback

Meanwhile, bottom-placed Nakhon Ratchasima will be looking forward to welcoming former Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Worawi Makudi as their new executive chairman with a victory over Police Tero at home this evening.

Worawi, also a former Fifa executive member, was appointed to the club's top office on Wednesday.
