NEW YORK _ Police on Tuesday charged the cabbie turned terrorist accused of detonating a pipe bomb near the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, authorities said.
Akayed Ullah, 27, was hit with charges of weapons possession, supporting an act of terrorism and making a terroristic threat for the Monday morning attack.
The pipe bomb failed to detonate fully and he was the only person seriously wounded by the blast.
Ullah could be arraigned as early as Tuesday at Bellevue Hospital, where he is recuperating from burns and cuts to his hands and stomach, law enforcement sources said.
The Port Authority police charged Ullah, but the case is expected to be prosecuted by the U.S. attorney's office, a source said.
Three commuters suffered minor injuries when Ullah set off his homemade bomb inside a tunnel linking the Port Authority Bus Terminal to the Times Square subway station about 7:20 a.m. Monday.
Ullah said he chose the spot when he saw a Christmas poster in the tunnel, police sources said Monday. He told investigators he was angry about airstrikes against ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria.
He said that he was inspired by ISIS but had not gotten direct orders from the terror group.
