Porsche tweaks 911 GT3 RS for 2018

Iconic sports car aims for lightweight thrills rather than the ballistic performance of the GT2 RS.

Is this merely a lighter and faster GT3?

You could say so, as well as being a 911 that’s also best utilised on a racing track.

The GT3 RS seen here in official pictures is basically an updated version of the one based on the 991-designated generation.

Just to make sure that the GT3 RS has a fresh look, Porsche has given it newly designed bumpers and LED lights.

There’s the optional Weissach Package which brings a carbonfibre roof and magnesium wheels to help bring weight down to 1,430kg.

Does it still get an NA engine?

Yup. The GT3 RS gets a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six engine now producing 520hp at 8,250rpm (but capable of revving to 9,000rpm). That’s 20hp more than in today’s regular GT3 and pre-update GT3 RS.

And with new intake and exhaust manifolds, plus a tweaked engine management system, the 0-100kph time of 3.2sec is said to be better by a tenth of a second.

According to Porsche, the GT3 RS shares the same spring rates for the suspension with those in the GT2 RS.

Is this two 911s for different reasons?

Probably. As you may well know, the GT3 RS is about lightweight thrills and a non-turbo engine. By the way, the GT3 RS only comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic like in the GT2 RS.

The GT2 RS is about ballistic performance, thanks to twin turbos pushing output to a scorching 700hp. It’s three tenths of second quicker than the GT3 RS from 0-100kph.

And while the GT3 RS is essentially a 25 million baht supercar, the GT2 RS is a 30 million baht variation of a slightly different theme.
