Porsche reveals new 911 Carrera S for 2019

Eighth-gen model gets a racier appearance, more power, streamlined interior functions and driver-assist technologies.

It just keeps looking better…

The Porsche 911 has been a sports car icon for decades which was why Porsche never messed up with its design.

As a result, the latest model, codenamed 992 and seen here in official pictures, is just what the 911 has to look like.

But we agree, the 911 has always become a better-looking car over the past generations.

And this eighth-gen model hits the right buttons again with its wider looks and accentuated wheel arches. The only dimensional figure Porsche has released is the 45mm wider front track.

Like in the Panamera, there’s a full-width rear lamp cluster so that you can easily spot it on the road.

The interior has been revamped, as well, to accommodate the brand’s latest digital screens and streamlined functions. Only the rev-counter remains analogue.

It launches as a Carrera S first?

That’s right. The 992, which is making its world premiere at the Los Angeles auto show, is initially available in Carrera S outfit.

Power of the 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six has been cranked up to 450hp, 30hp more than in the 991-coded predecessor.

As the 992 is slightly larger and heavier, this incremental increase in power is necessary.
Thanks to a new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic (superseding the older seven-speeder), Porsche says fuel consumption isn’t worse than before.

The latest Carrera S will hit 100kph from standstill in 3.7sec, a good 0.4sec quicker than before. The all-wheel-drive 4S does 3.6sec.

And when equipped with launch control of the Sport Chrono package, the time is slashed by a further 0.2sec in both cases.

Expect the regular Carrera to arrive next year with entry-level power of 385hp, an increase of 15hp. The power gap between these two particular 911s would now be a distinct 65hp.

Don’t tell me it can drive itself…

Oh no, Porsche has merely extended some driver-assist technologies that have become quite practical these days, some of it being lane keep assist. Of course, the driver can always choose to be in total control of the car.

A first for Porsche is the so-called Wet Mode, which can detect water on the road and adjust the stability control and anti-lock brake systems accordingly.

As you might have already heard, the 992 has also been engineered to take hybrid tech, although that would take place in around two years.

The Carrera S should hit Thai showrooms early next year at some 13 million baht with everything else coming periodically after that, be it Turbo, Cabriolet, Targa, GTS, GT3 etc.
