A stolen Porsche is the third vehicle in the past week to take off after police tried to stop it. Each time, there has been a high-speed chase before the car was stopped.
On Tuesday, a BMW was only stopped after a tyre-puncturing device was laid across the road. And on Saturday afternoon, a 15-year-old boy allegedly narrowly missed a pram as he revved up the Mazda he was driving to try to evade police.
The latest in the spate of car thefts followed by chases happened on Tuesday when the white Porsche Cayenne took off when told to stop by police.
ACT Policing said the vehicle was stolen from outside a home in Forrest on Monday afternoon. The thief got into the place and took the keys, officers said.
Just before 9pm that evening, the police said "the vehicle was involved in a petrol drive-off at a service station in Hawker".
On Tuesday afternoon, it was seen speeding on Sulwood Drive in Kambah.
"Later that day, at about 1:50pm, police observed the stolen vehicle on Long Gully Road travelling towards the Monaro Highway," the police said.
"Police activated their emergency lights and sirens and directed the vehicle to stop but the driver refused, engaging in dangerous driving behaviours and repeatedly attempted to evade police."
The vehicle was then abandoned in Toole Place, Kambah. "Several people were seen running from the area before officers arrived. Enquiries into the identity of the driver and occupants are ongoing."
"ACT Policing is urging anyone who saw the white Porsche Cayenne on Monday and Tuesday, or who has dashcam footage of the vehicle, particularly in the Kambah, Richardson, or Hume areas, to contact Crime Stoppers via www.crimestoppers.com.au. Please quote 8468714," ACT Policing said.
They also want to see any dashcam footage of the previous chases, or hear from anyone with information about them.
A black BMW was involved in the earlier chase this week. The vehicle with stolen NSW plates (CTN85T) was spotted at Clift Crescent in Richardson. The driver was directed to pull over but took off instead.
Police said they couldn't tell whether the driver was male or female. Either way, the car sped off "driving dangerously near other vehicles through Richardson, Isabella Plains and Calwell," ACT Policing said.
"Officers deployed tyre-deflation devices and the vehicle was later located abandoned in Chisholm."
On Saturday afternoon, a 15-year-old boy allegedly narrowly missed a pram as he revved up the Mazda he was driving to try to evade police. Patrol cars then arrested the teenager when the car came to a stop in a no-through-road. He was due to face court.
