Porpoises spotted enjoying last of autumn sun in Bristol Channel

Porpoises have been spotted enjoying the last of the late summer sunshine, splashing about in the Bristol Channel.

Helen Lazenby was working at home which overlooks the channel in Portishead and was making a quick cuppa in the kitchen when she glanced up to see the porpoises.

This is not the first time Helen, a volunteer with Portishead RNLI, has seen the creatures in the channel.

In the Spring she saw a family of poprpoises, including a baby one, splashing about in the sunshine.

Helen said: "I saw the porpoises when I was in the kitchen.

"But the lifeboat crew also saw them when they were out training on Sunday."

Helen said this time she spotted two porpoises.

"I saw the dorsal fin come above the water and raced to get my camera, " she said.

"They were going out on the tide down towards Clevedon.

"It's a great indicator of the quality of the water in the Bristol Channel.

"If it was polluted in any way, they wouldn't be here.

"Seeing them out there made my day."

The Bristol Channel has a resident population of harbour porpoises as well as being visited by various species of dolphin.

People can[take part in a monitoring programme as volunteer observers through regular surveys along the coast organised by the Somerset Wildlife Trust.
