
Sepak takraw star Pornchai Kaokaew and taekwondo fighter Panipak Wongpattanakit won the best amateur athletes of the year honours at the Siam Sport Awards ceremony yesterday.
Pornchai won two gold medals at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia while Panipak took home one.
Pornchai was voted as the best male amateur athlete ahead of cyclist Jai Angsuthasawit, also an Asian Games gold medal winner, and world bodybuilding champion Khuntan Puangpetch.
Besides winning the Asian Games gold medal, Panipak also claimed several other titles last year.
She beat skeet shooter Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit and paragliding star Nunnapat Phuchong, both Asian Games champions, for the best female amateur award.
Boxer Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and golfer Ariya Jutanugarn were named the best professional athletes.
WBC super-flyweight champion Srisaket successfully defended his title twice.
He won the best male professional athlete award ahead of golfer Kiradech Aphibarnrat and footballer Chanathip Songkrasin.
Ariya comfortably defeated badminton player Ratchanok Intanon and tennis star Luksika Kumkhum for the best female professional athlete title.
Ariya won three LPGA titles last year, including her second major crown at the US Women's Open.
The Bangkok native swept all major season awards including the player of the year, money leader and Race to the CME Globe.
She also claimed the world No.1 ranking which she lost to South Korea's Park Sung-Hyun this week.
