Popular Wicklow cliff walk closed off over safety fears

The Bray-Greystones cliff walk has been closed off to the public due to safety fears.

Wicklow County Council has physically closed off the area due to "serious erosion" which poses a great danger to the public.

Investigations following landslides revealed that repairs were not possible and the only solution was to relocate the walk inland.

While the walk had been officially closed since the landslides in March, a high number of people still continued to use it.

Now the council is using more robust fencing to keep people out of the area as inclement weather in the coming months may contribute to further erosion.

Additionally, an alternative looped walk around Bray Head was developed in early summer and signs were put in place to help walkers.

A spokesperson for the Wicklow County Council said on Facebook: "Attempts to close the walk have been problematic as some walkers are ignoring notices and barriers.

"The public are advised that there is currently no through route on the Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk; it is safe to walk from Greystones as far as the barriers at the southern end and on the Bray Head loop at the northern end."
