Popular Wetherspoon's pub closed after rat spotted inside

A popular Wetherspoon's pub was forced to close after a baby rat was spotted inside.

The Bull and Stirrup in Chester city centre was closed on Friday, June 28, as pest control moved in.

The pub chain was quick to quash rumours that the rat entered the kitchen - and highlighted that environmental health officers were satisfied with the pub’s procedures.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon told Cheshire Live: “We can confirm that a baby rat came in from the beer garden, towards the reception area and went into a hole in the wall in the void area.

“A pest control team came and blocked the hole.”

He added: “We believe the rat came from the nearby canal. The following day the dead rat and one other rat were disposed of.

“The pub was closed for from 7pm on Friday evening until Saturday morning for a deep clean.

“EHO (Environmental Health Officers) have visited the pub and satisfied with the pub’s procedures.

“There is no truth in the rumour that the rodent went into the kitchen.”

The pub was relaunched as a Wetherspoon venue in 2017 by Royle Family star Ricky Tomlinson.
