Popular Waterford city pub forced to close after evidence of rats found in bar area

A popular bar in Waterford city was forced to temporarily close last month after evidence of rats was found in the bar area.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland handed down the closure order to The Exchange Bar.

The pub in Ballybricken shut on January 3 after an inspector noted "evidence of rodent activity".

A hygiene inspection report said: "A grave and immediate danger was found due to failure to comply with Regulation (EC) 852 2004 on the Hygiene of Foodstuffs annex II chapter three.

"Evidence of rodent activity was found in the bar area, posing a risk to contamination of foodstuffs, food preparation surfaces, equipment and utensils."

The closure order was lifted four days later on January 7.

The Irish Mirror has contacted the pub for comment.

Meanwhile, a storage area for a garage in Dundalk, Co Louth was closed after rodent activity was found where food and equipment is kept.

The Londis store at Bellurgan Service Station was without the storage unit for five days after it had to shut on January 22.

A HSE officer's report said: "Evidence of rodent activity was found in the external building comprising of a walk-in freezer and three storage areas storing food, food contact materials and equipment, posing a risk of contamination to all items in these areas."
