Popular town centre bar to re-open this week under new owners

A staple of St Helens nightlife is set to re-open its doors this week.

The Running Horses, previously run by JD Wetherspoon, was one of the town centre's most popular bars- dating back to its beginnings as Chicago Rock in 2001. However, the doors were closed for the last time at the end of 2021.

In recent weeks, people had noticed work going on inside the bar however, with speculation growing on what may become of the Chalon Way premises.

It has now been revealed a Lancashire-based firm, Green Leisure, has taken the reins, with a view to re-open the pub on March 14. It is understood the new owners will keep the well-known Running Horses name.

Signs in the window of the bar appeared, reading: "Grand Reopening, March 14 10am, Green's The Running Horses Free house."

It is believed the revamped Running Horses will have an emphasis on sport, with plans for live entertainment twice a week, and pool tables placed in the large building, neighbouring the Cineworld cinema.

Co-owners Jeremy Peel and Ben Gregg held a recruitment event earlier in the week and have taken on 20 new staff from the area for their new venture.
