Popular steakhouse in Newport, Sixteen, closes down after 'difficult' time

A popular steakhouse in Newport has shut down.

Sixteen, on Clarence Place in Newport, was known for its impressive Tomahawk steaks, fine-dining cuisine and its extensive cocktail menu.

The restaurant first opened in the town centre in late 2017, before relocating, just on the other side of Newport Bridge.

It regularly featured in WalesOnline's round up of the best 25 restaurants in the city.

Previously located at 16 High Street, the business moved premises into its current site merging with the popular Mojo The Foodbar in February 2018.

Owners Lewis Lewis, 37, and Seng Koh, 38, confirmed they had closed the business in early 2020, "after a difficult five years within the Newport food and drinks scene".

Mr Lewis said: "Newport is a great city, one which we are passionate about and delighted to have helped create employment over the years and to have also been a catalyst for other food and drink businesses to follow.

"However rents continue to increase and business rates are inconsistent and are far too high, with landlords removed from the situation, and not understanding the local economy which in turn does not allow for small businesses to flourish or make a reasonable living."

The businessmen added: "While I am sure Newport is on the rise, Newport's Labour council leadership needs to do more to support and help businesses to thrive.

"Friars Walk is a great addition to the city but is not where the city starts and ends.

"Instead, this area has become a reason for other parts of the city to not get the use it should, or indeed footfall, and continues to fail as there seems to be a lack of focus outside of Friars Walk.

"If large organisations within this area struggle to afford rents and rates what hope do the independent retailer or restaurant have."

Mr Lewis added: "We have welcomed many guests over the years and have in many cases made life-long friends.

"We thank each and every person who has supported us along the way."

They confirmed that their other venture, the Riverside Sports Bar and Kitchen, also in Clarence Place, would remain open as usual.

They said: "We now continue with our journey at Riverside Sports Bar And Kitchen and aim to continue operations there as normal."

"We have always worked hard within our operations and continue to do so to ensure their success. We would close by saying support local, it really does make a difference where your money goes."
