Residents of Elephant & Castle will be “loving it” a little less this Christmas, as the Walworth Road branch of McDonald’s has closed its doors for the final time.
The branch at 198-200 Walworth Road officially shut at midnight on Sunday, having served customers in south London for over 40 years.
The fast food chain, which has over 1,400 restaurants across the country, is closing the branch due to redevelopment plans in the Southwark area.
A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “Due to local redevelopment plans in the area, our Walworth Road restaurant will be closing at the end of November.
“All employees have been relocated to neighbouring McDonald’s restaurants.”
A flyer announcing the closure thanked the restaurant’s valued customers for “being part of our community since 1982.”
It read: “After more than four decades of serving you, this restaurant will have its final day of trading on Sunday 30 November, closing at midnight.”
The nearest McDonald’s for Elephant & Castle residents are now in the Butterfly Walk shopping centre in Camberwell and in Rye Lane, Peckham.

The closure comes as McDonald’s announced its new festive menu, which was rolled out on Wednesday and features a collaboration with Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch.
The chain will be selling The Grinch Big Mac Meal, Mischief McFlurry, Frozen Grinch Lemonade, Grumble Pie, McShaker Fries and The Grinch 9 McNuggets Meal throughout the Christmas season.
