Popular snack sold in Tesco and Dunnes Stores urgently recalled over health fears

A popular snack product sold in supermarkets including Tesco and Dunnes has been recalled urgently.

Certain batches of Jacob’s 18 Rice Cakes Multigrain & Seeds are being recalled due to the presence of the unauthorised pesticide ethylene oxide in sesame seeds, an ingredient in the product.

The product, made in Poland, is a popular choice in Irish households.

The Food Safety Authority said in a notice: "This pesticide is not authorised for use in foods sold in the EU. Although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an immediate risk to health, there may be health issues if there is continued consumption of ethylene oxide over a long period of time.

"Therefore, exposure to this substance needs to be minimised. Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batches."

The batches are labelled as below;

Best before March 2021 - Code: AO82 or CO82 or AO83 or CO83

AND

Best before September 2021 - Code: A273
