Popular Scots ice cream parlour slammed for no tipping policy

A popular Scots ice cream parlour has been slammed for banning tips, with workers told to refuse them from customers.

Loop and Scoop in Glasgow's West End came under fire from union Unite Hospitality for their "completely unacceptable" policy.

The parlour's ban on tips came to light after a customer asked them through social media why one of their members of staff would not take a tip despite working "incredibly hard" dealing with the massive queues at the premises.

In response, Loop and Scoop told them: “We have a no tips policy as we aren’t like a restaurant where tipping is a gesture of good service toward the waiter, our orders are placed at till removing a large element of that service.

“Then it’s storing it and splitting it up, declaring it to HMRC, processing it on payroll between the team etc.

“We did it in the past but it’s more difficult to manage and the monetary value wasn’t high either so in the end it was simpler not to accept tips.

“We appreciate the gesture though, and maybe you could donate what you tried to offer to a charity of your choice.”

However, this stance was roundly criticised on social media, with Unite Hospitality revealing that there was "no such thing" as a no tips policy.

Speaking to the Record, Bryan Simpson, Unite Hospitality organiser, called on Loop and Scoop to get rid of the "entirely unnecessary policy."

He said: "For any hospitality employer to claim that it has a no tips policy is completely unacceptable.

"Our members at Loop and Scoop are providing an excellent service to customers in unbearably hot conditions and they should be allowed to take tips from those customers who wish to give one.

"This is an entirely unnecessary policy which denies minimum wage workers the chance to make enough to live on.

"We would urge the owners of these venues to ditch this police before their customers desert them and their workers lodge a collective grievance."

Loop and Scoop did not respond to a request for comment.
