Popular school worker died falling down stairs at home

A mum-of-three and popular school staff member died after falling down the stairs at her home, an inquest has heard.

An inquest was opened on Thursday into the death of St Joseph's Catholic School and Sixth Form Centre health and wellbeing coordinator Suzanne Curtis who died on July 20 at her home in Baglan Road, Port Talbot . The 37-year-old leaves behind three children.

Acting senior coroner Colin Phillips said: "Police attended and it seems she was found at the bottom of the stairs. CID were involved in the investigation and did not suspect any third-party involvement.

"It's believed she tragically fell down the stairs."

The death of Miss Curtis, who was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, was described as "sudden and unexplained". She was identified by her son Connor Curtis and a police officer, the hearing was told.

Following her death school head teacher Eugene Scourfield paid tribute to her as he notified parents and pupils of the news via their social media channels and website.

He wrote: "Suzanne will be greatly missed by her family and friends and by all of our school community. Her colleagues will miss her and our pupils will miss her too, especially those with whom she had regular and direct contact."

A prayer service was also held at the school on July 26 which saw school counsellors on hand to offer comfort and consolation.

The inquest has now been adjourned until January 9 next year pending the results of a post-mortem examination and toxicology reports.
