Popular Rutherglen bingo hall closes for good after 45 years in business

A popular Rutherglen bingo hall has announced it is now permanently closed.

Mecca Bingo made the announcement on their Facebook page earlier this afternoon.

The chain have yet to confirm whether staff have been made redundant or offered roles elsewhere in the company.

In a statement they said: "It's with a very heavy heart we have to announce that Mecca Bingo Glasgow Rutherglen will be closing permanently.

"We want to take the opportunity to thank you, our wonderful customers, and our team for the past MECCA-tastic years! Thank you for your loyalty and all the great memories we've made together.

"Our sister clubs including Drumchapel, the Forge, Hamilton, Paisley and the Quay are open, and we hope to welcome you all there to keep making great memories and to bring you the usual Mecca fun."

The chain first opened in Rutherglen Main Street on March 21, 1975, with TV presenter Anne Aston, famous for her role in 1970s show The Golden Shot, the guest star at the Mecca’s opening night.

Over the years staff at the bingo hall were well known for helping out local charities and good causes.

Prior to becoming a bingo hall the venue had served as a cinema.
