Popular ring-tailed lemur at Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian dies

A popular ring-tailed lemur at Five Sisters Zoo in West Lothian has died.

Keepers and visitors have been expressing their sadness after Junior passed away following a short illness.

He had been at the zoo for 14 years along with other members of his family. Many people got the chance to meet him during the zoo's regular lemur-feeding experiences.

The zoo said he was one of their favourite animals and staff were "devastated" at the playful primate's death.

In a post on Facebook, Five Sisters Zoo said: "We are so sad to confirm that Junior, one of our ring tailed lemurs sadly passed away last week. Despite the efforts of our zoo keepers and vets he passed away after a short term illness.

"Junior was in his twenties and has lived here at the zoo with his dad and brothers since 2005, he was a firm favourite with both our keepers and visitors.

"We are all devastated and he will be sorely missed by everyone at Five Sisters Zoo."

Visitors have been sharing their memories of Junior.

One said: "What a shame. One of my favourite animals is the ring tailed lemurs. Had the great experience of hand feeding them when I did my zoo keeper for the day for my 50th five years ago and it has stayed with me since."

Another posted: "Absolutely heartbroken. Junior was my wee pal. Loved cuddles during feeding sessions. Hope Stumpy and brothers are all doing well."

Another said: "You were such a lovely wee guy."
