More than 150 people took part in a popular cycling showpiece in Perthshire.
The Muthill Sportive made its return following an enforced break as a result of coronavirus pandemic restrictions last year.
Starting and finishing at Muthill Parish Church, delighted organisers said 84 cyclists tackled the 84-mile Red route, while 66 participants took on the 31-mile Blue route, half a dozen chose the 12.8-mile Yellow course and 20 entrants, including many families, signed-up to the 3.7-mile Green route.
Funds raised through previous Sportives have supported the successful completion of phase one of the Muthill to Crieff cycle path, which was constructed in 2016.
Proceeds from this year’s event will support development of the proposed 50-metre span bridge across the River Earn just south of Crieff, as well as maintaining the existing stretch of cycle path.
Nick James of Muthill Sportive said: “We had around 160 participants in the Muthill Sportive this year, there seemed to be lots of enthusiasm, perhaps not surprisingly after the last 18 months.
“We were very pleased with numbers and interest in the event. We had three new routes this year, with the two longest running along the dramatic driveway to Drummond Castle.
“We’ve already had feedback that people loved the routes that were designed to take in some of the finest countryside around here, with many already looking forward to 2022.”
Nick continued: “A new challenge this year was the COVID pandemic. We had a nominated COVID officer to make sure the event was as safe as possible and, luckily, the good weather meant that the traditional soup, rolls and home baking – a bit of a trademark of the Sportive – could be served to riders outside.
“As usual, we had support from local businesses, including the Co-op in Crieff – which kindly provided much-needed nutrition in the shape of bananas and flapjacks – and Drummond Estate, which allowed us to route the Sportive through the castle grounds.”
Nick added: “The Sportive has again raised a good sum towards the Muthill to Crieff cycle path.
“This long-running project aims to create a safe route for school children and other walkers and cyclists to get from the village to Crieff, three miles to the north.
“We’ve already built the first phase and the money raised helps us to maintain it in good condition.
“We are currently working with Sustrans and Perth and Kinross Council to complete the project, which will include a new bridge over the River Earn for walkers and cyclists.
“Community events such as the Sportive are really important in demonstrating support for the project as well as encouraging us all to get out of our cars and onto our bikes.”
Nick also thanked the people of Muthill for supporting the event, many of whom donated home baking or volunteered to help with marshalling and other organisational duties.
