Popular Paul: Normal People star Paul Mescal to appear at Dublin’s Film Festival this March

Normal People’s Paul Mescal is set to appear at the Dublin Film Festival this March.

The Dublin International Film Festival will move entirely online this year because of Covid-19.

The event is set to take place from Wednesday, March 3 to Sunday, March 14.

This year's short film schedule has been revealed and it will kick off the festival. One of the short films chosen for the festival is Drifting , starring Irish legend Paul Mescal.

The movie's co-director and co-writer Robert Higgins tweeted: “Delighted to have ‘ Drifting ’ screening as part of this year’s @DublinFilmFest. Been a regular attendee of the festival for years so it’s great to be screening at it for the first time!”

The 14-minute film tells the story of Cian (Mescal) and Pat (Dafhyd Flynn), who have been joined at the hip since they were children and have the run of their small town in the midlands.

Cian is content to coast through a life of booze and casual hook-up but Pat has grown weary of his surroundings, and the film will look at their diverging lifestyle choices.

The short film takes place over 24 hours, as Cian's behaviour sends Pat over the edge.

Drifting was filmed in Longford in 2019, and was written, produced and directed by Robert Higgins and Patrick McGivney.

Paul Mescal has recently been nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award. He received the nomination for Best Actor in a Limited Series category, for his role as Connell in Normal People.

The Irish actor will go up against many famous faces in his category – including John Boyega (Small Axe), Hugh Grant (The Undoing), Chris Rock (Fargo), Mark Ruffalo (I Know This Much is True) and Morgan Spector (The Plot Against America).

This news comes after Paul received his first Emmy nomination for the same role last year, but he lost out to Mark Ruffalo.

To get a glance of the Maynooth native at Dublin’s Film Festival, tickets for the short film programmes are available now, while the full programme is set to be launched on Wednesday, February 3.
