Parks across Newcastle quiet as people respect coronavirus lockdown despite sunny weekend

We're all desperate to be back outside and enjoying the beautiful weather.

But despite the temptations this weekend, it seems many Geordies are doing their bit to protect the NHS by staying at home.

In popular Newcastle parks Jesmond Dene and Heaton Park, only a few people were to be seen out enjoying their exercise in the beautiful green space.

The scorching Saturday saw temperatures soar into the 20s in some parts of the country, while Newcastle bathed under bright sunshine.

But Government warnings were mostly heeded. In what may be the hottest April since 2014, people are only able to go outside for essential shopping, work, care reasons or a limited amount of exercise.

With at least 20,000 people now dead after being diagnosed with coronavirus, social distancing is still vital, as weeks of being unable to see family and friends start to take their toll on many.

The sight of these popular parks near-deserted in such glorious weather is almost eerie, for those of us more used to seeing them thronged with families playing and people sunbathing.

But it shows that the majority of people are abiding by the rules, despite the difficulty of staying inside, especially for those who don't have their own gardens.

Northumbria Police have praised residents of the North East for their adherence to the rules.

Chief superintendent Janice Hutton on Friday said: “We understand that now the weather is improving, people naturally want to spend more time outdoors and what’s great is that the majority of you are making sure you do so in line with the Government’s guidance - exercising close to home and avoiding our national parks, beaches and beauty spots and for that we are really grateful.”
